Data tracking · GA4, Tag Manager, Looker Studio

Numbers you can actually decide on.

Most analytics setups count the wrong things, double-count the rest and stop working the day a cookie banner goes in. We set up tracking that survives updates, respects consent and tells you what the site is really doing.

GA4 + GTM One container, named events, nothing duplicated
Consent Mode v2 Built in from the start, not bolted on
Every form, every call Tracked as a conversion and tested end to end
Monthly A Looker Studio dashboard and a short note

What we set up

Six things, in this order.

01 A measurement plan before any tags. We agree what a lead, a sale and a good visit mean for your business, then build only what answers those questions. Most dashboards fail here, not in the tooling.
02 GA4 and Tag Manager, done properly. One clean container. Named events you can read. No plugin firing its own copy of the pageview, no three versions of the same tag from three previous agencies.
03 Consent that actually works. Consent Mode v2 wired to the banner, so denied means denied and UK GDPR is respected. Where Google allows it, modelled data fills the gap so you still see the shape of things.
04 Conversions that mean something. Forms, phone taps, bookings, checkout steps. Each one submitted by hand, checked in GA4, then imported into Ads and matched against Search Console.
05 Bots filtered out. A third of WordPress traffic is not human. Data-centre visits, scrapers and referral spam are excluded so a spike is a spike, not a script.
06 Everything connected. GA4, Ads, Search Console and the CRM speaking to each other. A Looker Studio dashboard shows what people searched, what they clicked and what they did next.

The audit

What we usually find in the first hour.

Almost every site we open has at least three of these. None of them show up as errors. They just quietly make the numbers wrong.

Double counting

  • GA4 loaded by a plugin and by GTM
  • Pageviews inflated by two or more
  • Bounce rate impossibly low
  • Sessions split by a cross-domain gap

Missing conversions

  • Thank-you page never tracked
  • Phone taps invisible on mobile
  • Bookings on a third-party widget lost
  • Checkout steps ending at the cart

Consent problems

  • Banner blocks everything, including essentials
  • Or blocks nothing and records everyone
  • Consent Mode never configured
  • No record of who agreed to what

Bot traffic

  • Direct spikes from data centres
  • Referral spam in the top ten sources
  • Uptime monitors counted as visitors
  • Your own team never excluded

Nothing connected

  • Ads optimising to the wrong event
  • Search Console never linked
  • Leads in the CRM with no source
  • Three dashboards, three different totals
Looker Studio dashboards

One page you will actually open.

GA4 is built for analysts. You are running a business. So we put the handful of numbers that matter on a single Looker Studio page, in your language, refreshed automatically.

Leads by source, revenue by channel, the pages that convert and the ones that leak, all against last month and last year. No logins to learn; it arrives as a link and a monthly PDF.

Built around your questions The dashboard starts from what you asked in the measurement plan, not from a template. Usually five to eight numbers, never forty.
Every source in one place GA4, Search Console, Ads and, where useful, your CRM or WooCommerce revenue, blended so the totals finally agree.
Compared, not just counted Every figure sits next to the previous period and the same period last year. A number on its own is not information.
Kept honest Bots excluded, consent gaps noted, filters checked in the monthly review. When something looks off, we say so in the note.
How it works

Three weeks to clean numbers.

Week one Audit of what is installed and the measurement plan: what counts, what does not, what Ads should optimise to. You get it as a one-page document.
Week two Build in Tag Manager on a staging copy. Old tags removed, events named, consent wired. Nothing touches the live site yet.
Week three Every conversion tested by hand, consent tested in both states, then live. Ads and Search Console connected the same day.
Every month A short written note on what the numbers say and one recommendation with a reason. If something breaks after an update, we see it in the daily review.

Data tracking is inside every maintenance retainer. As a standalone setup it is quoted after the audit, because the right answer depends on what is already there.

Common questions

Do we have to use Google Analytics?+

No. GA4 is the default because it connects to Ads and Search Console, but if you prefer a privacy-first tool such as Plausible or Matomo we set that up instead. The measurement plan is the same.

Will tracking slow the site down?+

Not noticeably. One Tag Manager container, loaded once, with tags that fire only when they should. We remove the duplicate scripts most sites have accumulated, so it is usually faster afterwards.

Do you do server-side tagging?+

Yes, when it earns its keep: high ad spend, ad blockers eating conversions, or strict consent requirements. For most small sites a clean client-side setup is enough and we will say so.

What about Meta, LinkedIn and other pixels?+

They go in the same container, behind the same consent, with the same conversion events. One place to look, one thing to maintain.

Who owns the accounts?+

You do, always. GA4, Tag Manager and Ads sit on your Google account. We work as a user and can be removed in a click.
