How to Track Perplexity Referrals in Google Analytics: A Step-by-Step Guide

September 21, 2024

To track Perplexity referrals (or referrals from any other specific source) in Google Analytics, you need to monitor traffic coming from the referral source. Here’s how you can set it up, step by step:

1. Set Up Referral Tracking in Google Analytics (GA4)

Step 1: Log in to Google Analytics

  • Go to Google Analytics and sign in to the property where your website is tracked.

Step 2: Navigate to Acquisition Reports

  • From the GA4 dashboard, go to Reports on the left-hand menu.
  • Click on Acquisition > Traffic Acquisition to view where your website traffic is coming from.

Step 3: Filter for Perplexity Referrals

  • In the Traffic Acquisition report, look for the Session default channel group column. This should show different traffic sources such as Organic Search, Direct, Social, etc.
  • To find Perplexity, look under Session source/medium or Referral.
  • You can then filter the data to focus on Perplexity.ai or any URL associated with Perplexity.

Step 4: Create a Custom Report (Optional)

  • If you want to track this referral source specifically, you can create a custom report in GA4.
    • Go to Explore and click on Create a new exploration.
    • Choose the dimensions as Source/Medium or Referrer, and filter it for Perplexity.ai.
    • Save the report for easy access later.

2. Use Google Tag Manager (Optional)

For more advanced tracking, you can use Google Tag Manager (GTM) to track specific referral URLs or set custom events for traffic coming from Perplexity.

Step 1: Create a Trigger for Perplexity Referrals

  • Set up a trigger in GTM that fires when the referrer contains Perplexity.ai.
  • Go to Triggers in GTM, click New, then choose Page View.
  • Set the condition: Referrer contains “Perplexity”.

Step 2: Set Up a Tag

  • Create a new tag in GTM that records this event as a custom dimension or tracks it as a pageview with the referral source.

By implementing this, you can closely monitor traffic from Perplexity in Google Analytics. Whether it’s organic referrals or specific campaigns, you’ll have a clear view of how this source contributes to your site’s performance.
